Eugen Raportoru

Eugen Raportoru (b. 1961, Bucharest) is among the most active Romanian visual artists of his generation, specializing in painting at the National University of Arts Bucharest. He is the only Romanian Roma artist to exhibit at prestigious venues like the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Vatican under UNESCO, and museums in Oslo and Stockholm through the Roma Party. In 2022, Raportoru became the first Romanian Roma artist to exhibit at La Biennale di Venezia, commissioned by the European Institute for Roma Arts and Culture (ERIAC). At MoBU 2023, Raportoru presents a series of oil-on-canvas works exploring Roma women's community from a traditional perspective and the "bridge" motif inspired by Venice and the master Baba, whom he admired. The "bridge" symbolizes connections across divided worlds of ethnicity and class. Alongside paintings, Raportoru features the "wagon," an installation exhibited at ICR London and the Târgu-Jiu Art Museum, reflecting Roma cultural identity. Born to a mixed heritage (Romanian father, Roma mother), Raportoru’s work delves into the complexities of dual identity in post-communist society. His exhibition includes a live-performance inviting public interaction in the creative process.
