Olimpiu Bandalac

A Landmark of Local Cultural Postmodernism

Olimpiu Bandalac (b.1955) is a visual artist, video maker, animation film director, who lives and works in Bucharest. Since 1980, he exhibits drawing, painting, installation, photography, experimental and animation film. His interest is related to the perennial themes of the visual arts: the portrait of the artist at different ages, time/movement, history and eco-art. Starting from 2019, he is involved in artistic education – offering drawing, coloring and modeling courses to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and multimedia courses at the National University of Fine Arts in Bucharest.

One of the important artists of our artistic current, a complex creator, Olimpiu is a landmark of local cultural postmodernism, a period that he assimilates and overcomes. The artist operates with the "past-present" both at the level of the idea and the construction of the work of art. Although chronologically framed in the eighties generation, his art is timeless and located outside of trends.

His works are in private and public collections such as: MNAC Bucharest, MARE Museum Bucharest, Brașov Art Museum, Cluj-Napoca Art Museum, Kunsthalle Nürnberg, State University Museum São Paulo.

The display presented at MOBU departs from the standard framework of an art fair and is articulated as a true exhibition with a concept, where the meanings of the creations are revealed along the "stops" at which the works and their installation challenge the visitor. An assemblage that is related to painting – and yet it is not painting only, the montage of various elements, objects, frames, colour or black and white graphics. Getting closer, you would want to hold a magnifying glass to be able to discover the very carefully selected chromatic shades, successive layers of pictorial material, colors and overlays, and returns that happen over many years. The circuit through the plan of the exhibition space is thought of as a route through chapters of state, chapters of sensations, and chapters of thoughts. It is like weaving a connection between thinking, observation, and emotion. The graphic works constructed by using handmade paper that the artist made himself and painted in neon pink, fuchsia, and visceral red, with shades of white and yellow, grow through overlaps and become objects, enriching the walls of the Scemtovici & Benowitz pavilion. The paintings and graphic works are accompanied by photography, installation, and object.”
